Liposuction is the most common plastic surgery procedure performed today. It will permanently remove fat from problem areas and improve the shape of the region by sculpting the fat. It is ideally suited for the lower body but can also be used on the neck, arms, and even breasts in men ( gynecomastia ) and women ( reduction mammoplasty ).

The surgery is individualized to meet your needs. After examining you, Dr Friedlander will recommend the procedure that will best address your needs, and review that procedure in detail. Often times, several areas are treated to provide a balanced appearance.

The procedure is performed by placing small incisions (about ½ inch in size) in natural skin folds, where possible. A tumescent fluid is infused, which permits gentle removal of fat. Small cannulas (tubes) attached to a suction machine are passed repeatedly through these incisions to remove the fat. The empty spaces once occupied by fat will coalesce and flatten to recontour the region. Post operative swelling is normal and can last several weeks. A compression garment or girdle must be worn to help minimize swelling. Natural elasticity in the skin will permit tightening after the procedure. Conditions which alter this elasticity such as pregnancy, weight change or age will affect the amount of skin tightening that occurs. Patients my return to work after several days. Strenuous activities are not permitted for 4 weeks.
