Vaginal Rejuvenation Surgery

Board Certified Female Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Beverly Friedlander

Many women come to discover that the intimate areas of their bodies start to change over the years. For example, some women find that excess skin has developed along their labia minora (inner lips of the vagina) and hangs beyond the labia majora (outer lips of the vagina). Others experience discomfort due to rubbing that occurs when participating in athletic activities, wearing tight clothing, or having sexual intercourse. If you are embarrassed by the appearance of your labia, or you are symptomatic from pressure or irritation, Dr. Friedlander suggests you undergo labiaplasty. What is Labiaplasty?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

Labiaplasty is a popular procedure for many women who are self-conscious about the appearance of their genitalia. Labiaplasty (or vaginal rejuvenation) is a surgical procedure that sculpts and shapes the most intimate areas of a woman's body.

The procedure can restore a thinner, more pleasing appearance to the labia with minimal scarring. The enlarged central portion is removed while ensuring that the sensitivity and color are not affected. Some patients choose this procedure because the thickening of the inner and outer lips makes them visible in tight clothing (camel toe). Others undergo labiaplasty because they feel uncomfortable engaging in sexual activities. Whatever the reason, labiaplasty can enhance your self-esteem as well as the appearance of your genitalia.

Am I a Good Candidate for Labiaplasty?

Most women who desire surgery want to correct and enhance the appearance of the labia minora. Technically, labiaplasty refers to surgery to improve the inner labia (labia minora). However, you may benefit from surgery of your genitalia if you are experiencing one or more of the following concerns:

  • Droopy or small mons pubis
  • Enlarged labia majora (outer lips)
  • Enlarged or asymmetric labia minora (inner lips)
  • Atrophic labia majora (outer lips) and mons pubis
  • Thinned labia majora (outer lips) and mons pubis

Candidates interested in Dr. Bev's NJ labiaplasty should be in good health and have realistic expectations. Dr. Friedlander will review your medical history and perform a complete examination. All post-operative instructions will be discussed in detail during your consultation.

Labiaplasty Options

Beverly Friedlander, MD

Dr. Friedlander performs two types of labiaplasty surgery that will reduce the redundancy and the bulk of your labia. Labiaplasty is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or local anesthesia with oral sedation.

"Trim" Labiaplasty

Reduces the labia by trimming the edges down. It is ideal for women who have a thick or darkly pigmented edge.

"Wedge" Labiaplasty

The "Wedge" approach removes a triangular portion from the center of the labia. This is better suited for women with vertical and horizontal excess skin on their labia, which might exist after massive weight loss. The wedge technique also results in an anatomic alignment of the labia minora.

Labiaplasty Recovery

All postoperative instructions will be reviewed in detail before the surgery. There may be mild discomfort, swelling, or even spotting during the first week, but these symptoms are entirely typical. You will be asked to apply an antibiotic ointment. In one week, you may return to work. Then in four to six weeks, you may resume sexual and athletic activities or when otherwise instructed by Dr. Friedlander.

Labiaplasty Results

The results of your labiaplasty include a more proportional, symmetric, and taut inner labia. It can take up to six months to realize the full results. However, labiaplasty can provide you with long-lasting results as well as emotional and physical relief that will improve your vulva and overall quality of life.

Labiaplasty
Frequently Asked Questions

The mons pubis continues downward and forms the outer lips of the vagina (called the labia majora), which are seen just to the side of the labia minora. Labiaplasty addresses changes in the appearance of the labia minora, but the labia majora can be a source of concern as well.

An enlarged appearance may be associated with heredity, pregnancy, and aging, but weight change plays a more significant role here. In some cases, the labia may appear as a visible bulge in the crotch area, limiting the selection of attractive and feminine attire and impacting self-esteem and sexual activity. If the problem is associated with an overgrowth of fat, liposuction alone may be sufficient. Other times, the mons or labia majora may need to be trimmed. When the mons pubis hangs low (obstructing the vaginal area, as seen after weight loss), a pubic lift needs to be performed. A pubic lift raises the tissue by surgically removing excess skin and fat. It then re-suspends the skin to lift the mons and create a more youthful appearance. This is often done during a tummy tuck as well.

Atrophy of the mons and labia majora are less common conditions. They may be caused by a loss of estrogen and are often associated with extreme weight loss. The result is wrinkling, laxity, or deflation of the area, which may become a source of pain during intercourse or other activities and affect your self-esteem. This condition can be improved by restoring the lost fullness with fat grafting. Fat is harvested from areas of natural excess and transferred to the mons and labia to provide more youthful contours and improve appearance and comfort. In addition, fat offers a long-lasting correction. Fillers provide a non-surgical alternative.

The type of labiaplasty, anesthesia, and the surgeon's experience have the biggest impacts on the pricing. The wedge incision technique is technically more challenging than the trim labiaplasty, so it's usually more costly. More complex surgeries or combined procedures may incur additional fees. Financing may be available to make the cost of labiaplasty in New Jersey more affordable.
