A trusted New Jersey plastic surgeon can help you put the final touches on your body after massive weight loss by removing excess skin and fat. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. Beverly Friedlander can help you decide what after-weight-loss surgical procedure will make you feel more confident in your skin and satisfied with your appearance. After all, you've been through to get healthy, and you deserve it.

What Types of Procedures can be Done After Massive Weight Loss?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

Plastic surgery after massive weight loss is a combination of surgical procedures aimed at removing the loose skin and enhancing your body's shape and proportion. Weight loss affects the entire body, not just one area. Exercise is an excellent way to burn calories and improve muscle tone, but it does not affect loose, hanging skin. Plastic surgery offers the opportunity to remove all the excess skin left behind after weight loss and feel better about yourself. Each case is unique in its distribution of loose skin and dictates the selection of procedures and the location of the incisions. Every attempt is made to hide incisions in natural skin folds and beneath clothing.

Upper Body Lift

Upper body lifts generally are related to loss of breast volume and sagging chest or arm skin. The treatment typically involves a breast lift with or without an implant to create a more youthful appearance. An upper body lift is often a standalone procedure, but it can be combined with an arm lift or bra roll lift, depending on the distribution of loose sagging tissue. In men, a breast reduction is performed to remove the loose skin.

Lower Body Lift

Lower body lifts will improve the abdomen, buttocks, pubic region, and outer thighs simultaneously. It is an extensive procedure involving a tummy tuck incision that continues onto the back. The lower body lift permits a 3-dimensional re-contouring with a tightening of the underlying muscle and re-suspension of the tissue achieving the best results. The addition of an inner thigh lift will help tighten the loose skin between the legs.

Am I a Good Candidate for After-Weight-Loss Surgery?

The ideal candidates have reached and maintained a stable weight for several months and are unhappy with their appearance. Patients are generally healthy with no chronic medical problems.

Invasive multiple procedures are often needed to address all areas of concern—these surgeries can be lengthy, are staged for safety, and are usually performed a few months apart. However, the following surgical methods performed at the same time include:

  • Facelift
  • Thigh Lift
  • Body Lift
  • Breast Lift
  • Liposuction
  • Tummy Tuck
  • Breast Augmentation with Lift
  • Arm Lift (Traditional or Extended)

It is important to maintain realistic expectations to be satisfied with the results of these surgeries.

Recovery for After-Weight-Loss Surgery

Beverly Friedlander MD

Recovery times vary greatly, depending on the procedures performed, but generally require one to three weeks out of work and four to six weeks restriction from strenuous activities.

Some operations are same-day procedures, while others require an overnight hospital stay. Depending on the specific method, you may need to have drains to reduce fluid buildup at the wound site. Dr. Friedlander may advise you to wear a compression garment day and night initially, then reduce it to daytime use only. Please take prescribed antibiotics and pain relief medications as directed.

Results for After-Weight-Loss Surgery

While you can expect to see improvement to the treated areas immediately after surgery, it takes time for the full results to unfold. Surgery of any kind causes swelling. The more invasive the procedure, the more swelling is likely to be present. The inflammation can last several months or up to a year. As the swelling goes down, the tissues will relax and settle into their final shape.
