Shapely legs are a desirable feature. Whether it is your inner thigh or your outer thigh that bothers you, loose skin can accumulate in the thigh as we age making some of us reluctant to wear shorts or a bathing suit. A thigh lift can improve the shape of your legs by removing excess fat, tightening the skin and re-contouring the upper leg, resulting in slimmer thighs that are more proportioned to the remainder of the body.
Board Certified Female Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Beverly Friedlander
Many of us have had to deal with the consequences of weight gain and loss, often associated with pregnancy. Weight change frequently results in the loss of skin elasticity. Aging and gravity are other causes. As the skin loses its natural elasticity it begins to droop, and may look loose and flabby. Dimpling may also become accentuated. Lifting procedures are intended to create a tighter more attractive thigh with improved contours. Improvements in the surface irregularities such as cellulite can also be seen. A good candidate for a thigh lift is someone who is unhappy with the appearance of her thighs, and is healthy and close to her ideal weight.

Is it the inner thigh or the outer thigh that bothers you? Both are plagued by the same problem-loose flabby skin and often times excess fat. The procedure involves the removal and tightening of excess skin to provide a smoother more toned contour. Liposuction is frequently performed as an adjunctive procedure. For the inner thigh, an inconspicuous incision is placed in the natural crease, permitting lifting of the deeper tissue and skin.
This is ideal for women with moderate amounts of skin and fat in the inner thigh since the scar remains hidden in the groin. When excessive amounts of skin are present as after massive weight loss, a vertical incision along the inner thigh is needed. For the outer thigh, the incision is usually placed high on the buttock, extending from the groin around to the buttock, providing a secondary lifting of the buttock. Older techniques placed incisions in the buttock fold, which was undesirable since the scar would be visible in modern undergarments and bathing suits. These procedures are part of a larger group of body contouring procedures and are highly individualized. When combined with other procedures, it is possible to enjoy an overall refreshed appearance. Dr. Friedlander will discuss your personal aesthetic goals and develop the best treatment plan to address them after she has met with you and examined you.
The overall recovery for the 2 procedures is similar. Your new smoother contours will be visible immediately after the procedure, and you will experience swelling, bruising and soreness. The lateral thigh lift is a larger procedure, and Dr. Friedlander likes her patients to spend the night in the hospital.
She uses drains for this procedure. Her medial thigh lift patients can recover at home. She wants her patients to be up and walking the day of the surgery. You will experience a pulling sensation from gravity acting on the incisions and walking, sitting and bending may place stress on the incision lines as well. Compression garments help to reduce swelling and should be worn as indicated by Dr. Friedlander. Swelling improves over a period of several weeks. Light activity is permissible for the first 2 weeks keeping in mind that there may be a pulling sensation caused by gravity. Most patients can return to work 2-3 weeks after surgery, and resume working out about 4-6 weeks after surgery.

Fortunately, significant complications from thigh lifts are uncommon. All procedures carry some risks and these include wound healing problems, infection, fluid or blood collections, bleeding and scarring.
