Most women will notice changes in their breasts as they begin to age. Breast asymmetry can occur due to various life changes, and some women may feel embarrassed about the difference in size or shape of their breasts. When minor differences occur, they are usually of no concern. However, when the difference is more noticeable, it can cause distress or anxiety for many women. Fortunately, several breast procedures can correct asymmetrical breasts to give them a more balanced and natural appearance.
Board Certified Female Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Beverly Friedlander
Breast asymmetry can occur in many forms. This condition can involve the size, shape, and position of a woman’s breasts as well as the position of the nipples and areolas. Asymmetry usually has increased noticeability after pregnancy and breastfeeding due to one breast having been favored by the baby or if one breast was more developed prior to pregnancy. Other types of asymmetry can occur from juvenile hypertrophy of the breast, which is a rare condition where one breast is significantly larger than the other. Traumatic injuries to the chest can also interfere with breast development and cause noticeable asymmetry.
Many women who struggle with asymmetry find themselves having trouble fitting into certain types of clothing. Others may feel self-conscious or anxious about becoming intimate with their partner. Patients interested in correcting breast asymmetry can undergo plastic surgery to correct the following issues:
There are various breast surgeries that Dr. Friedlander can perform to help you feel more beautiful and confident. To address breast asymmetry New Jersey patients to Dr. Bev have the following procedures available to them:
Asymmetry can be corrected using implants of different sizes and dimensions, such as saline, silicone, Natrelle INSPIRA™ “gummy bear” implants, or IDEAL IMPLANT®. However, implants may lead to additional asymmetry and should be used only for larger size discrepancies and after thorough discussion during your consultation.
Can improve the overall position of one or both breasts by lifting and bringing them into balance with each other.
Will reduce the size of the larger breast to correct asymmetry. This procedure can also reposition and resize the nipples so that they appear more balanced and symmetrical.
Uses fat from areas of the body, like the abdomen, back, or thighs, that is injected into the breasts for a more balanced and natural appearance.
Following your procedure, swelling and bruising will occur but should begin to resolve after a few days. You will notice that swelling may not be symmetrical if different procedures were performed on each breast. Make sure to avoid all strenuous activities for at least four weeks, as this can affect healing or lead to bleeding. You can typically return to work one week after your surgery. You will begin to notice improvement in the size and shape of your breasts as they continue to heal.
You can expect long-lasting results that will produce a bust line that is balanced and aesthetically pleasing, as well as a boost in confidence. Final results will become apparent a few months after your procedure.
