Ideal candidates must be in overall good health and have realistic expectations about their results. Many women who choose to undergo NJ breast reduction surgery would like smaller and perkier breasts.
Others may want to reduce the size of their large breasts due to the emotional and physical discomfort they may cause. This surgery is appropriate for teenagers with overdeveloped breasts that have stopped growing, as well as for mature women. In the case of teenagers, it helps to make them feel more comfortable with themselves, not only physically but mentally. Whether you are 16 or 60, NJ breast reduction may be right for you if you suffer from any of the following:
Breast reduction surgery is an outpatient procedure that typically takes two to three hours, depending on the amount of correction needed. Excess fat, breast tissue, and skin will be removed during your procedure as the breasts are lifted to their new, higher position. The nipples and areolas are also elevated, creating a more youthful contour. The surgical technique and incisions used for your breast reduction procedure will depend on the condition of your breasts.
This technique will place the incision around the areola. Then, it will vertically extend to the breast fold and end horizontally within the fold to create an “anchor” or “keyhole” shaped scar. It is best used for women with severely enlarged breasts.
This approach is best performed on women with mild to moderately enlarged breasts. An incision will be made around the nipple and extend down to the breast crease, which will result in a “lollipop” scar.
This “scarless” breast reduction uses liposuction to remove fat from the breasts, resulting in little to no scarring. Liposuction can also be performed to remove fat deposits along the sides of the breasts. Scarless breast reduction may be used in older patients where fat has replaced the glandular tissue, but it only slightly improves younger patients whose breasts are very dense or “glandular.”
Some women with enlarged breasts also have protruding or elongated nipples. Dr. Friedlander can easily shorten the nipple length with a small incision on the nipple stalk during the breast reduction procedure. She can also reduce nipple size for patients who feel the areola is too large. Because the areola tissue is usually darkly pigmented, the resulting scar is unnoticeable in most cases.
Most women appreciate an immediate improvement when they awake from surgery. You will experience some swelling, bruising, and soreness, but this should resolve after a few weeks. A dressing change will be performed the day after surgery, and you will be asked to wear a surgical bra to protect your new contours. Make sure you avoid all heavy lifting and strenuous activities for approximately one month. After all, an enormous weight has been lifted off of their chests!
You will feel as though an enormous weight has been lifted off your shoulders following your breast reduction surgery.Your new, smaller breasts will also balance the remainder of your figure so that you look and feel more beautiful. Any discomfort can be controlled with a mild non-narcotic pain medication that Dr. Friedlander will prescribe.
You may engage in activities of daily living and light household activities a day or two after your surgery. However, it is essential to remember that you can still hinder the healing process even though you feel good by returning to an active lifestyle too soon. You may return to light work after one week, but you can work from home one to two days after the surgery. As with most surgical procedures, there are some risks and side effects involved with breast reduction surgery. Dr. Friedlander will review these with you after she has examined you. The breasts must stop growing before the surgery is performed. Women 35 and older are advised to have a mammogram within one year of the surgery. It is recommended for women of childbearing age to postpone the surgery if they intend to nurse.
Unless there is a proven history of seeking alternative therapy— physical therapy or chiropractic treatment—insurance providers may not cover surgery for breast reductions. In some cases symptomatic enlargement of the breast due to neck pain, back pain, and bra strap grooving may be covered by insurance. It is recommended to check with your insurance provider about your coverage options. Financing and payment plans may be available to help make the cost of breast reductions in New Jersey more affordable.
While a breast reduction results in perkier breasts, the primary goal of the surgery is to reduce the overall size of the breasts or decrease bust size. On the other hand, a breast lift (mastopexy), while it removes the excessive sagging tissue, does not usually result in a substantially reduced bust size. In general, a breast reduction is for patients who feel their breasts have always been too large, while a breast lift is suitable for patients who are happy with their cup size but have experienced breast sagging due to pregnancy, aging, or weight loss. Dr. Friedlander offers both procedures and can help you decide which one is more compatible with your goals.
