Your eyes are central to the communication of your emotions. Unfortunately, they are also often the first area to show the visible signs of aging and fatigue. A blepharoplasty offers a way to counteract these cosmetic concerns and restore a youthful, natural-looking gaze so you can look as young and refreshed as you feel. Dr. Beverly Friedlander performs eyelid surgery in Short Hills, New Jersey, to enhance the appearance and confidence of her patients.

Drooping eyelids are commonly caused by excess skin and fat that usually begin to develop in your 30s and 40s. Starting at this age, gravity, heredity, and environmental factors cause the skin to thin out and stretch. This results in droopy upper eyelids and puffy bags beneath the eyes. Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is a cosmetic surgery that improves the appearance of the eyes, allowing you to look younger and more rejuvenated. This procedure involves removing excess skin, tightening the muscles around the eye, and repositioning fatty pockets to restore a refreshed look.

Both men and women can benefit from eyelid surgery. Fine lines such as crow’s feet begin to develop when we are in our 30’s, followed by loose skin and bags in our 40’s and 50’s. Droopy eyelids and bags may be hereditary, stimulating some people to seek correction at a much earlier age.
The location of your blepharoplasty incisions will depend on whether you undergo upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both.
Through these incisions (for both upper and lower blepharoplasty)
These incisions tend to heal very well and are nearly invisible once they do. Makeup can be used to cover the scars as they fade.
Blepharoplasty can be performed alone if you only experience signs of aging on the upper or lower eyelid; however, many patients display laxity on multiple areas of the face, including the brow, forehead, midface, and jawline. Combining surgeries or treatments may be recommended to maintain facial balance and harmony.
Common combination procedures include:

Eyelid surgery is an outpatient procedure, but due to the anesthesia, you will need to have a friend or family member drive you home and stay with you. You can anticipate that your eyelid region will be bruised and swollen. Some patients have a difficult time opening up their eyes initially or have a sensitivity to light, which is often combined with a feeling of tiredness or itchiness.
Eye drops can help soothe this initial discomfort and should be used liberally for two to four weeks. Any physical pain can be alleviated with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication. Sutures are usually removed after five days, and most patients feel comfortable watching television within two to three days. You can typically return to work after one week, resume wearing contact lenses after two weeks, and restart heavy lifting and strenuous exercise after four weeks.

Blepharoplasty is considered to be very safe; however, all surgical procedures come with some degree of risk. Dr. Friedlander will discuss your potential risk factors, including your medical history and any medications, during your consultation. Some of the potential risks after eyelid surgery include:
You can reduce your chances of complications by following Dr. Friedlander’s recommendations before and after blepharoplasty.
As a blepharoplasty physically removes skin and repositions pockets of fat, you will start to notice your results soon after your surgery; however, these results will be obscured by bruising and swelling that may take several weeks to subside.
Once the bruising and swelling dissipate, you will be able to see the full extent of your results, including a more rested and youthful eye appearance. While eyelid surgery provides significant results for many years, it will not stop the natural aging process, and you may eventually experience laxity in the eye region. You can help prolong the quality of your results by staying out of the sun, keeping the eye area moisturized, eating a healthy diet, getting adequate sleep, and undergoing non-invasive cosmetic treatments, like laser resurfacing and BOTOX® Cosmetic.
