Neck Lift

in New Jersey

Even though the neck sits directly below the face, it does not always get the same love and care as the face does. This, combined with sun exposure and repeated movement, causes the neck to be one of the first places to show the visible signs of age. The neck and décolleté often develop sagging skin, loose muscles, and excess fat, leading to a double chin or a “turkey neck.” Neck lift surgery addresses these concerns and creates a youthful pedestal for your face. Dr. Beverly Friedlander offers her patients in New Jersey neck lifts to help them achieve their aesthetic goals.

What is Neck Lift Surgery?

Board Certified Female Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Beverly Friedlander

Age, sun exposure, and environmental damage cause the facial tissues to move south and the neck skin to loosen. Neck lift surgery tightens and repositions muscles, removes fat, and trims excess skin to reveal a smoother and more contoured neck.

A neck lift with Dr. Friedlander can address the following cosmetic issues:

  • Slack jowls
  • Vertical neck banding
  • Wrinkles and fine lines
  • Submental fat under the chin

Am I a Candidate for Neck Lift Surgery?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

A neck lift rejuvenates the neck and jawline by correcting the signs of aging in that area—this procedure is not designed to alter your facial features. Women and men who have localized neck skin and muscle laxity may benefit from this procedure.

Ideal neck lift candidates:

  • Do not smoke
  • Are in good overall health
  • Do not have medical concerns that impair healing
  • Have realistic expectations

What are the Benefits of Neck Lift Surgery?

While often overlooked, a wrinkled neck, sagging jowls, submental fat, and neck bands can be a detriment to people who want to age gracefully and maintain their looks as they get older. Having a smooth, taut neck and jawline will allow you to appear more youthful well into your 40s and beyond. The results of a neck lift can last a decade or more with proper care. Finally, the scars are well-concealed when the surgery is performed by a highly qualified New Jersey neck lift surgeon such as Dr. Beverly Friedlander.

Women consider neck lift surgery to:

  • Reduce vertical banding on the neck
  • Correct sagging skin and loose muscles
  • Eliminate fatty deposits in the neck
  • Improve the jawline

How do I know if I need a neck lift or a face lift?

If your main concerns are your neck and jawline, a neck lift is generally the best approach. A standard facelift, on the other hand, treats laxity from the cheeks to the jawline. Dr. Friedlander can perform a facelift, neck lift, or she can combine the two procedures depending on your specific goals.

How is a Neck Lift Performed?

Neck lift surgery is performed under general anesthesia with the assistance of an anesthesiologist who will be present throughout your procedure. Dr. Bev will remove the redundant tissues and also tighten the underlying muscles in the neck if necessary.

Where are my Neck Lift Incisions Made?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

Neck lift incisions are made behind the ear and under the chin. The location of these incisions makes them easy to conceal under hair or makeup. Neck lift surgery tightens the underlying muscles and trims excess skin in the neck and chin region.

Should I Combine my Neck Lift with a Facelift?

While a facelift usually involves the combination of a neck lift, a neck lift can be performed as a standalone procedure if there is only laxity on the neck. It is essential to maintain facial harmony and balance.

Unfortunately, this is not always possible with a single cosmetic procedure. If necessary, Dr. Friedlander may suggest additional facial surgeries that will maintain an overall youthful complexion. This combination may include:

  • Liposuction of the neck, to get rid of submental fatty deposits
  • Facelift surgery, to restore youthful facial contours
  • Eyelid surgery, to reduce sagging and hooding of the eyelids
  • Brow lift surgery, to raise sagging eyebrows

What Can I Expect During my Neck Lift Recovery?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

Neck lift surgery—even if it is performed in combination with a facelift or other facial rejuvenation surgery—is an outpatient procedure.

You will be bruised, swollen, and sore after your neck lift. All post-operative discomfort can be lessened or alleviated with prescribed or over-the-counter pain medication.

You can help reduce this discomfort and swelling further by keeping your head elevated at all times, as this will promote proper blood circulation. Most patients return to work within one to two weeks—depending on the nature of their job, but should avoid strenuous exercise for at least four weeks.

What happens during a Neck Lift with Liposuction?

Many patients have excess fat that accumulates beneath the chin, especially as they grow older. These individuals may benefit from a neck lift, chin liposuction, or both. If you have a neck lift and liposuction at the same time, Dr. Bev will perform the liposuction first before reshaping the neck. Liposuction involves injecting tumescent fluid into the site, placing a small incision beneath the chin, and breaking apart the fat in a back-and-forth motion. She then extracts the fat through the cannula with machine-powered suction. Reducing submental fat results in a more youthful, svelte profile and creates a more defined jawline.

Are There any Risks Associated with Neck Lift Surgery?

Neck lift surgery is invasive, and therefore, complications are possible. While rare, these complications can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Blood clots
  • Hematoma
  • Seroma
  • Asymmetry

You can help reduce your risk of these complications by following all of Dr. Friedlander’s recommendations before and after the procedure.

When will I See my Neck Lift Results?

The results of your neck lift will start to become apparent immediately following your neck lift and will continue to improve and take form over the following weeks and months as the bruising and swelling disappear. You will be able to enjoy your neck lift results for many years; however, neck lift surgery does not stop the natural aging process. You can help to prolong the quality of your results by staying out of the sun, keeping your skin hydrated, and following a healthy lifestyle.

Frequently Asked Questions

While the neck lift results can last up to ten to 15 years, the results are technically not permanent. A neck lift can take several years off your appearance, but it will not prevent age-related changes in the future. The best way to maintain neck lift results is to avoid smoking, use sunscreen daily, and use high-quality skincare products.

While non-surgical neck rejuvenation treatments such as fractional lasers and Ultherapy can firm and smooth the neck skin to an extent, nothing compares to the results of a traditional neck lift. This is especially true for patients with vertical neck bands, which are best treated by surgically tightening the platysma muscle.

A neck lift pairs beautifully with a facelift, resulting in a more harmonious appearance overall. It also goes well with a brow lift or blepharoplasty, which firms and tightens the skin on the forehead and on the eyelids, respectively. If you have other areas of concern, Dr. Bev will suggest what specific combination of procedures will provide the optimal result.

The estimated cost of neck lift surgery is reportedly around $9,125 in the United States. Several variables can impact the final price, such as the surgeon’s years of experience, aftercare costs, type of anesthesia, and surgical technique.

Insurance does not cover cosmetic neck lift surgery.

Dr. Bev makes small, strategically hidden incisions so the resulting scars are not apparent to others in social settings. The exact size and placement of the incisions vary depending on the amount of skin and fat removed. Typically, she places the incisions discreetly behind the ears, under the chin, and within the natural creases and shadows on the neck.
