Kybella is an exciting new treatment recently FDA approved to improve the appearance of the double chin without surgery. Are you unhappy with the fullness below your chin, despite being in relatively good physical condition? According to a recent study, more than 66% of consumers are bothered by the appearance of their neck and chin. Fullness in this area can lead to an older heavier look. Now, there is a non surgical solution.
Double Chin Reduction
Kybella reduces the fat under the chin (submental fat) without surgery. Previously, the only means of effective fat reduction in that area was liposuction. Many people shied away from surgery for various reasons. With Kybella, there is no fear of anesthesia, no “recovery” and no downtime, meaning you can get right back into your normal routine.

Kybella is FDA approved for the submental (below the chin) area. Deoxycholic Acid, the active ingredient, was used to dissolve fat elsewhere on the body many years ago, a procedure called Mesotherapy. It may be that as we gain more experience in smaller areas such as the chin, that we will once again begin to apply this procedure elsewhere, but the need for large quantities of Kybella may make this prohibitive.
Kybella is a synthetic version of an enzyme, deoxycholic acid, which is naturally found in the liver. Deoxycholic acid is a bile salt that aids in fat digestion. When injected, it causes disruption of the cell membrane leading to a release of the fat. The fat is naturally removed from your system over a few weeks, resulting in an improvement in appearance and reduction in size of the double chin.

New Jersey plastic surgeon Dr. Friedlander offers Kybella as a solution to treat excess submental fat in both men and women. We commonly think of fat being caused by weight gain, but genetics and the aging process can be culprits as well. A double chin makes us look older and heavier. Removing the fat re-contours the area, improving the jowl and providing a generally younger and healthier appearance leading to improved self confidence. Good candidates have pinchable fat under the chin, eat well and are generally healthy. Kybella will reduce the volume of fat. Although it does not specifically help the “curtains” that sometimes hang from the neck (platysmal bands and loose skin), it will provide an overall improvement in the appearance.
Two to four Kybella treatments are usually required to see your desired result. The number of treatments depend on the amount of fat which is present. They are spaced 4-8 weeks apart. Following treatment, you will typically begin to see changes within 2-3 weeks since your body is gradually removing the fat from the area.
A Kybella treatment is very simple and takes about 15-20 minutes. Dr. Friedlander, will mark the area to be treated with a grid. An ice pack is applied followed by a local anesthetic. Ice can be used afterwards. Some patients experience swelling or bruising. Most people experience mild tenderness or numbness in the area treated. All of these disappear spontaneously and do not affect your return to routine activities.
The results from Kybella treatment are gradual but long-lasting. Typically, patients begin to see a noticeable reduction in fat beneath the chin after two to four sessions, spaced about four to six weeks apart. However, the full results can take a few months to manifest as the body naturally metabolizes the destroyed fat cells. Once the desired aesthetic is achieved, patients are often thrilled with the more defined and contoured appearance of their jawline and chin. Since Kybella permanently destroys fat cells, the results can be long-lasting, provided a stable weight is maintained.

After receiving Kybella injections, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and redness in the treated area. These side effects are normal and typically subside within a few days to a week. The swelling is often most noticeable in the first 48 hours post-treatment, so planning around social or work events during this time is advisable. Although Kybella does not require extensive downtime, it's recommended to take it easy for a couple of days post-treatment to allow the body to heal.
After treatment, avoiding strenuous exercise, excessive heat, and massaging the treated area during the initial recovery period can help reduce swelling and ensure optimal results. Over-the-counter pain relief may be used to manage any discomfort.
To maintain the results achieved with Kybella, some patients may choose to have touch-up treatments, although this is generally not necessary once the desired results are obtained. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, can also help prolong the effects of the treatment, ensuring that the newly contoured chin remains defined.
