PRP Hair Restoration

in Short Hills, New Jersey

Men and women alike desire full, thick heads of hair that look and feel healthy. Unfortunately, over 50 million men and women in the United States suffer from some degree of hair loss, usually from genetic factors. Platelet-rich plasma therapy (PRP) for hair restoration uses a non-surgical injection to slow down genetic hair loss and stimulate additional hair growth, resulting in fuller, thicker hair. With 30-minute treatments and no downtime, you can be on your way to achieving a confidence-enhancing appearance in no time.

What is PRP Hair Restoration?

Board Certified Female Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Beverly Friedlander

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is a derivative of your blood that contains growth factors (stimulators) and bioactive proteins that aid in regeneration (growth) and healing. PRP injections have long been used in medical settings to stimulate wound healing, blood vessel formation, collagen production, epithelial formation, and hyaluronic acid formation. Recently, it has shown great strides in hair restoration, as the growth factors may stimulate an increased production of hair. While this treatment cannot restore hair in patients with significant balding, it has shown promising results when used to address thinning hair in women and men when medications and hair transplants are poor options.

Am I a Candidate for PRP Hair Restoration?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

Candidates for PRP for hair loss are experiencing thinning hair that has not improved with diet, medications, or topical solutions. The PRP used in PRP therapy is derived from a small sample of your blood and injected into the scalp to stimulate the hair follicles. This treatment is safe, as there is no risk of infection or disease.

What Causes Hair Thinning and Balding?

Hair loss is a genetic problem frequently attributed to the hormone DHT (Dihydrotestosterone), which is present in both men and women. This genetically determined condition is typically associated with aging and results in a reduction of the hair growth phase.

In men, DHT, prevents the hair from reaching its full length and size. This is known as hair miniaturization. Not all hair locations are susceptible to DHT, which is why male pattern baldness primarily affects the front and top of the head while the natural hair growth near the back of the neck remains thicker. Hair loss in women is also genetically determined; however, it can be caused by more than just DHT. Hormones, medications, and medical conditions can all result in the overall thinning of the hair. Additional causes of female hair loss may include:

  • Hormonal changes, such as pregnancy, menopause, or ovarian tumors
  • Anemia (iron deficiency)
  • Thyroid disease
  • Collagen vascular diseases, such as lupus
  • Nutritional deficiency, such as vitamin, mineral, and essential fatty acid deficiency
  • Stress
  • Medications, such as Coumadin, Dilantin, antidepressants, etc.

How is PRP Hair Restoration Performed?

PRP hair restoration is a non-surgical, multi-step treatment performed in the safety and comfort of Dr. Friedlander’s Short Hills, New Jersey, office. While topical anesthesia may be applied, it is typically not needed for comfort.

During PRP Hair Restoration Treatment:

  • Blood is drawn by one of Dr. Friedlander’s nurses.

  • This blood sample is spun through a centrifuge to separate the growth-factor containing platelets from the other cells. This process increases the concentration of the platelets in the plasma by three to five times.

  • The PRP is transferred into small syringes and injected into thinning regions of hair growth on the scalp. Dr. Friedlander prefers non-activated platelets, meaning the growth factors and proteins are released after the PRP is injected into the treatment area. This technique is often more effective than using activated platelets, where the growth factors are released into the serum after centrifugation and quickly lose their efficacy.

PRP treatment requires multiple sessions to reach optimal results. Four to six treatments are given at monthly intervals initially and then twice annually for maintenance.

Are There Other Options for Hair Loss Treatment?

There are many options available for treating thinning hair. These treatments include: supplements, shampoos, topicals applied directly to the scalp, laser or light treatments, and oral medications. Scientific evidence supports the use of Finasteride (PROPECIA) in men and Minoxidil (ROGAINE) in both men and women. Both are associated with a modest improvement in hair growth. Minoxidil (ROGAINE)) stimulates hair growth by increasing the hair’s growth phase.

Minoxidil 2% is applied to the scalp twice a day or 5% applied once a day in women, and Minoxidil 5% applied twice a day in men helps to reverse miniaturization. Finasteride (Propecia) blocks the formation of DHT in men. It is contraindicated in women. Supplements, such as Nutrafol, are recommended and may benefit both men and women. Likewise, lasers and light may have mild beneficial effects on a small population of users. All of these treatments should be used concurrently with PRP hair restoration to provide additional improvement.

Can I Combine Other Treatments with My PRP Hair Restoration?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

While PRP hair restoration is commonly performed alone to address thinning hair, it can be combined with other non-surgical facial enhancement procedures to restore your self-confidence and achieve a more youthful appearance. Some of these treatments include:

What Can I Expect During My PRP Hair Restoration Recovery?

PRP hair restoration is not surgical, and, therefore, does not require the recovery period associated with surgical treatments, such as hair transplants. While there may be some irritation or tenderness at the injection sites, PRP hair restoration does not require downtime. Patients can return to their daily routines immediately after their treatment.

Are There Any Risks Associated With PRP Hair Restoration?

Because PRP treatments use your growth factors, there is no risk of allergic reaction or rejection. Some patients may experience temporary discomfort, tenderness, or itchiness, but these should resolve quickly.

When Will I See My PRP Hair Restoration Results?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

After a series of successful treatments at our Med Spa in New Jersey PRP hair restoration treatment may garner a 10 to 20 percent improvement in the reversal of miniaturization. Over time, the hair shafts should become thicker and darker, which contributes to the appearance of increased hair growth and density. Most people see a response within three to six months of the first treatment. The most significant improvements occur in areas of thinning hair rather than absent hair. With PRP hair restoration New Jersey's True Beauty patients may experience differing results; some will have better response than others, and there is no way to guarantee the extent or longevity of your results. However, the initial studies are extremely promising.
