Why Do We Need Microdermabrasion?

Board Certified Female Plastic Surgeon, Dr. Beverly Friedlander

At puberty, our skin begins to show the signs of aging. We develop areas which are prone to acne breakouts, sometimes leaving scars which may persist into adulthood. As time progresses, we develop subtle irregularities and unevenness in our skin. Microdermabrasion is able to improve all of these by removing the buildup of dead skin and debris. It should be incorporated with a program designed to ensure good skin health, such as sunscreens and proper cleansers, as well as products used to ensure soft, smooth skin. Our skin sometimes needs help, despite our best intentions.

What is Microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that uses a small, hand-held device to remove the top layer of your skin, leaving you with a more youthful appearance.

How Does Microdermabrasion Work?

Beverly Friedlander, MD

Microdermabrasion removes dry dead skin, allowing softer, healthier skin to come to the surface. A fine jet of natural mineral crystals is sprayed on the face at high speed to loosen the surface irregularities, before they removed. There may be some redness after the procedure, but it usually disappears quickly. The skin feels velvety soft and fresh. It is not possible to remove all unhealthy skin with one session, and several sessions are recommended for maximal improvement. Microdermabrasion works on the following:

  • Stretch Marks
  • Chicken pox and acne scars
  • Other skin irregularities and unevenness
  • Fine lines and rough patches, particularly on the neck, décolleté and hands
  • Age spots
  • Blackheads
  • Enlarged pores
  • Uneven skin tone and texture
  • Sun damage
  • Melasma, a common condition that forms dark spots or patches on the skin

Am I a Good Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

The best candidates for microdermabrasion are adolescents or older who have fine lines, age spots, wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, sun damage, skin texture irregularity, clogged pores, acne scarring or skin that feels dull or lackluster.

A gentle microcrystal spray with suction helps to reduce and eliminate imperfections of the skin by buffing away the top layer of dead skin cells to let new skin show through. It is particularly useful in younger women who have skin surface irregularities caused by active glands or in any one interested in soft velvety skin. It can also be used in other areas of the body prone to active glands or clogged pores such as the back. Microdermabrasion is non invasive and is a mild procedure without any downtime. For deeper skin folds or wrinkles, Ultherapy can be done in conjunction with Microdermabrasion “prep” for maximum skin tightening.

Types of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion can be performed using either of two techniques.

  • Crystal Microdermabrasion: This uses a small tube to shoot microfine crystals into your skin. The crystals are then vacuumed back up. This process is akin to a “high-powered scrub.”
  • Diamond Microdermabrasion: This does not employ crystals but instead uses a diamond-tipped wand to exfoliate your skin.

Microdermabrasion vs. Dermabrasion

You have probably also heard of the procedure known as dermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is less invasive than dermabrasion. Dermabrasion uses more intensive methods to remove the top layer of skin than microdermabrasion. Also, dermabrasion works only for people with fair skin, while microdermabrasion is suitable for people with any skin color.

Preparation for Microdermabrasion

Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and creams, and waxing for at least a week prior to your treatment. Then three days before your microdermabrasion, suspend your use of exfoliating creams and masks. Remove all makeup and thoroughly cleanse your face before arriving for your treatment.

Your Microdermabrasion Procedure

Your New Jersey Microdermabrasion technician will lead you to a treatment room and make sure you are comfortable. After changing into a gown, you’ll be asked to lie down on the treatment bed. The actual procedure is quick—usually taking only 15-30 minutes. After your microdermabrasion, your face will be cleansed again to sweep away any remaining crystals. If you are interested, your microdermabrasion can be combined with a complete facial that could extend the length of your treatment to 90 minutes.

Recovery

There’s not much to it. You may have some slight tenderness, swelling, or bruising that will fade within a few hours. Then for a day or so following your treatment, you will likely feel like you have a minor sunburn. But beyond that, you can go right back to your normal activities.

Aftercare and Maintenance

Make sure you keep your skin hydrated and use only gentle skincare products. It is vitally important that you diligently use a sunscreen of at least SPF-30 or higher.

Microdermabrasion Results

You’ll notice a difference right after your procedure. Microdermabrasion promotes new skin cell growth, resulting in skin that looks firmer, younger, and more toned than before your treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

We saw you wince when we mentioned crystals being shot onto your skin. But microdermabrasion is not painful and should feel like a vigorous but comfortable facial massage. Because microdermabrasion treats only the surface layer of your skin, it does not hurt.

Microdermabrasion does not create irritation. Some sensitive skins types can have a temporary redness which will be mild and subside a few hours post-treatment.

Microdermabrasion is considered an exceptionally safe treatment. But like any such procedure, it carries risks, including infection and allergic reaction to materials used in your treatment.

No, there is no downtime with this service; it is often called a “lunchtime peel”.

It is true that at-home, do-it-yourself microdermabrasion devices are on the market. But that would come under the general heading of “a really bad idea.” Professional devices are far superior to those used in these at-home kits, and professional providers will give you better, more consistent, and much safer results.

Most people require 6-10 sessions scheduled at least a week apart to achieve optimized results. But if you have a special occasion coming up or are just treating yourself to a day at the spa, a single session can leave your skin looking dazzlingly bright and feeling velvety soft.

Since microdermabrasion is a cosmetic procedure, your insurance will not cover the costs.

Prices will vary according to the type and number of treatment sessions you choose. Data compiled by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons placed the average cost of a single microdermabrasion procedure at $167, with a price range of up to $300.
